A Market Day in Nigeria in January 2024
The photo series “Market Day in Nigeria” captures the vibrant hustle and bustle of a typical weekly market in Nigeria. Using a high-speed wide-angle lens, I photographed various vendors and craftsmen such as knife sharpeners, cobblers, and vegetable and fruit sellers in natural daylight. These images convey an authentic impression of the colorful and dynamic market life and the cultural diversity of the region.
My inspiration came from the lively and colorful atmosphere of the market, which deeply impressed me. The series aims to give viewers a glimpse into the daily life and culture of a Nigerian market. I want to evoke a sense of appreciation and understanding for this cultural context.
The biggest challenge with this project was to immerse myself in the crowd and the immediate surroundings. While I was unsure how people would react to me, I experienced nothing but positive reactions. The openness and friendliness of the people, who were happy to be photographed, was a rewarding experience that underscored the authenticity of my work.
The photo series is not just a documentation, but also a window into another world, reflecting the beauty and uniqueness of everyday life in Nigeria.
