Rehacenter Ozubulu/Anambra State

“Disabled is the one who is being disabled.”
This also applies – and especially so – to Nigeria.

In Ozubulu, Nigeria, there is a place that gives children with physical disabilities something back that society often denies them: dignity, movement and a future. The Recdot Rehab Center under the direction of Rosemary Odunukwe is that place – and HIFA has been supporting it for years.

Rosemary cares for the children and young people at the center with great love and personal dedication. For her, inclusion is not a concept from a textbook – but lived everyday reality, in which children with and without disabilities learn, play and grow together.

🦠 Why polio is still an issue in Nigeria

In countries with incomplete vaccination coverage, children still contract polio – a preventable disease that leaves paralysis behind. Many of these children cannot walk without surgery and rehabilitation and literally crawl along the ground.

At the Ozubulu Rehab Center, precisely these children are taken in: after surgery and with special walking aids, they learn to walk again – some of them for the first time in their lives.

What surgery and rehabilitation make possible

Correction of the polio-related deformity – medical, precise

Walking aids

Inclusive school – learning together

What is special about the Recdot Rehab Center: it is not a special school. Children with and without disabilities learn here together – following the principle known in Austria as inclusion, which is still an exception in Nigeria. Rosemary lives this model every day.

Children who are still waiting

Not all children who need help have been able to undergo surgery so far. Some are still waiting – for donations that will make their surgery and rehabilitation possible. Every donation can help one specific child walk for the first time in their life.
